Dr. Banerjee explains that if bacteria enter the bloodstream through poor oral care, it can lead to infections affecting other parts of the body. For example, people with diabetes or heart problems are more vulnerable to infections caused by harmful mouth bacteria.

A recent study also showed that pregnant women with poor oral health may face a higher risk of premature birth. When you skip brushing at night, food particles stay stuck between your teeth. This leftover food ferments overnight, feeding bacteria and allowing them to grow rapidly. This is why good oral hygiene is essential every day.

How to Retain Oral Cleanliness: 5 Key Tips

Maintaining clean and healthy teeth doesn’t have to be complicated. According to Dr. Banerjee, small changes in daily habits can make a big difference in your oral health. Here are five important recommendations:

1. Brush Your Teeth Right After Breakfast

Many people brush their teeth first thing in the morning, right after waking up. But Dr. Banerjee suggests waiting until after you have breakfast. When you sleep, your mouth produces less saliva, which helps protect your teeth by neutralizing acids. After waking up, saliva needs time to do its job before you brush.

So, it’s best to freshen your mouth, eat your breakfast, and then brush your teeth. This way, you remove food particles and acids from your meal, giving your teeth a better chance to stay clean and healthy throughout the day.

2. Never Skip Brushing Before Bedtime

You’ve probably heard it many times—brush your teeth twice a day. But often, people skip brushing at night, especially if they are tired or busy. This is a big mistake.

Brushing your teeth after dinner is crucial because it removes plaque and germs that have built up during the day. If left on your teeth overnight, plaque hardens and can lead to cavities and gum disease. So, no matter how tired you are, make sure you brush your teeth before going to bed.

3. Keep Regular Dental Check-Ups

Regular visits to your dentist are a key part of maintaining oral cleanliness. Dr. Banerjee recommends seeing your dentist for check-ups and cleaning (called scaling) every 7 to 8 months.

Some people may be more prone to gum problems and require more frequent visits or special care. Even if your teeth feel fine, these check-ups help catch small issues before they become big problems. Scaling removes hardened plaque (tartar) that brushing alone can’t clean, keeping your gums and teeth healthy.

4. Don’t Forget to Floss and Use Mouthwash

Brushing your teeth is important, but it’s not enough to clean every part of your mouth. Food and bacteria often hide between your teeth where your toothbrush can’t reach. This is why flossing is essential.

Make it a habit to floss after dinner to remove particles stuck between your teeth. Also, using a mouthwash adds an extra layer of protection by reducing bacteria and keeping your breath fresh. However, keep in mind that mouth fresheners or mints only give temporary freshness and do not contribute to real oral health.

Another tip is to wait at least 10 minutes after drinking acidic drinks like coffee or tea before brushing. This allows your mouth’s pH to return to normal and prevents damage to your tooth enamel.
